Build a Smarter Pre-Season Soccer Strength Program

A strong pre-season gives high school soccer players time to improve force production, coordination, mobility, and running tolerance before competitive matches begin. The aim is not to exhaust young athletes with adult-style gym sessions. It is to prepare their bodies for repeated accelerations, decelerations, changes of direction, contested moments, and the demands of a long school and club season.

In the first week, the goal may be learning positions. By weeks three and four, the athlete can handle more load or more demanding variations. The final week should maintain strength while reducing unnecessary fatigue before trials or competition.

Select exercises that transfer to soccer

Include lateral lunges and controlled step-downs to develop frontal-plane strength, since soccer rarely occurs in a straight line.

Coordinate gym work with running

Strength work should sit alongside, rather than duplicate, field conditioning. A week might include one acceleration session, one change-of-direction or small-sided game session, two gym sessions, and lower-intensity technical training. Avoid placing heavy lower-body lifting immediately before the most demanding sprint or match simulation session.
